In the article I wrote about the Brearley brothers in March last year which was mainly about Sharp and Joseph, two of the brothers who were involved in the tannery business at Marshall, I also mentioned another brother, John, a hotel keeper and tannery manager who arrived in Australia in September 1854 aboard the Star of the East. He was born on 28 April 1829 and died on 17 June 1872 at Breakwater. He had married Ann Dean in Yorkshire. Ann was born in 1829 and died on 31 May 1883. Their children were: Charles — born in Yorkshire in 1852, married Hannah Mary Chaster in 1874, died 28 March 1891 as a result of gun accident at Fort Queenscliff Helen — died 29 May 1856, buried in the Church of England section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery unnamed — born 1858 at Marshall Sharp — born 11 September 1859 at Wangaratta, married Eliza Ann Hammond in 1881, died 20 November 1926 at Toorak Edmund Dean — born 1861 at Marshall, died 27 January 1862, buried in the Church of England section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery Eleanor — born 1863 at Breakwater, died 1900 at Bairnsdale Agnes — born 1864, died 11 January 1866 at Breakwater, buried in the Church of England section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery Agnes Maria — born 28 April 1866, died 4 1867 at Geelong aged 11 months, buried in the Church of England section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery Joe and Sharp Brearley had leased out a two storey stone building in Church Breakwater to Mrs Fowler as a hotel. In March 1862 the license was transferred to John who changed its name from "The Farmers and Fellmongers Arms Hotel" to "The Fellmongers and Tanners Hotel". He ran this hotel until he left to run his brothers' tannery in Tucker Street where he stayed for eight years. | John died on 27 June 1872 at his residence at Breakwater. Three days earlier a boil had developed on his elbow which rapidly grew worse with the pain spreading up to his right armpit. His arm grew gangrenous and he grew weaker. His funeral was one of the largest in the district for years. Ann died on 31 May 1883 at her residence in Autumn Street, Geelong West. |
