Carl August, son of Gotthilf Ernst (later known as Gottlieb Ernest) Gottlieb Ernest and Johanna Christaine (née Klempke) Rau was born in Prussia in 1830. He arrived in the colony aged 22 years in August 1853 on the Wilhelmsburg. He married Johanna Ernestine Bohm. They had the following children: Johanna Wilhelmina — born on 5 April 1855 at Grovedale, died on 15 April 1855 aged 10 days at Geelong, buried in an unknown location in the Grovedale Cemetery John Gottlieb Ernest — born on 28 March 1856 in Grovedale, married Ernestine Wilhelmina Baensch in 1881, died on 25 May 1914 aged 58 as a result of an accident (see article below), buried at the Freshwater Creek Cemetery Anna — born in 1869 at Paraparap, died the same year aged 8 months Julius — born on 2 February 1859 at Paraparap, died on 4 November 1861 aged 2 years at Puebla, buried in an unknown location at the Grovedale Cemetery Carl Erdmann — born on 21 July 1864 at Freshwater Creek, married Wilhelmina Burow in 1889, died on 25 April 1820 aged 55 at Geelong, buried in the Church of England section on the Geelong Eastern Cemetery In 1857 he purchased 126 acres of crown land on the south side of Thompsons Creek and planted an extensive orchard. The land had springs which enabled him to form a company to bottle mineral water. He had a shop at Market Square in Geelong, to retail his drinks He was a Barrabool Shire councillor serving from 1890 until 1895. Carl died on 14 January 1896 at his home at Paraparap aged 65. Ernestine died in 1899. |

My Great Grandmother, Ottilia Bertha Rau, was from Germantown. She was born in August 1864. She died on 18/11/1900 and is buried at Grovedale.
