John Henry, son of James and Charlotte (née Wynne) Horwood was born in 1863 at Waurn Ponds. He married Ann Hobbs on 8 October 1885 at the Highton Wesleyan church. The couple lived at Bexley, which was about 154 acres on the corner of Colac and South Valley Roads Highton. They had the following children: Edward Leslie John (Ted) — born in 1886 at Geelong, died in 1970 aged 84 years at Warrnambool Francis George (Frank) — born in 1889 at Waurn Ponds, married Elizabeth Coombe on 27 December 1921, died on 8 June 1976 aged 87 years at North Geelong Percy Charles (Perce) — born in 1890 in Geelong, died in 1961 aged 71 years at Blackburn Claude Harold — born at 1893 at Geelong Ruby Bertha — born in 1895 at Geelong Edwin Leslie John (Ted) — born in 1886 at Geelong, died on 14 August 1970 aged 84 years at Warrnambool Francis George — born in 1889 at Waurn Ponds, died in 1976 aged 87 at North Geelong Claude Harold — born in 1893 at Geelong, killed in action on 20 July 1916, buried at Rue-Du-Bois Cemetery at Fleurbaix in France Ruby Bertha — born in 1895 at Geelong, married Edmund Allan Curtis in 1920, died on 24 July 1971 at Belmont Albert Montague — born in 1898 at Geelong, died on 29 January 1921 aged 22 years at his parents residence "Bexley" in Valley Road Highton Ivy Pearl — born in 1905 at Highton, died on 13 December 1981 aged 76 years at Clifton Springs, interred in the rose garden at the Highton Cemetery John was a South Barwon councillor, serving from 1920 until 1935 including a year as president. He was an early camper at Bream Creek and had a road named after him. John died on 14 June 1954 aged 91 years at Belmont and was buried in the Methodist section of the Highton Cemetery with Ann who died on 14 October 1937 aged 75 years. | Section 8 of the parish of Barrabool, county of Grant was purchased from the Crown by Thomas Walker and subdivided in 1857. Annie's father, John Lowe Hobbs, leased the land shown above for many years. |
