Julius Heinrich, son of Gotthilf Ernst (later known as Gottlieb Ernest) and Johanna Christaine (née Klemke) Rau was born in Germany on 12 February 1839. He left Hamburg on the brig, Grassbroek, on 25 April 1858 arriving at Adelaide on 15 August at the age of nineteen years. His brother, Carl August, had arrived in the colony in August 1853. He married Augustine Wilhelmine Boehm in 1862 at Waldkirk Lutheran Church at Freshwater Creek. They had the following children: Emma Amelia — born on 31 October 1862 at Germantown, married Carl Wilhelm Belicke on 13 March 1884 at Geelong, died on 5 March 1918 aged 55 years at Bayswater Western Australia, buried at Karrakatta Roman Catholic Cemetery Ottilie Bertha — born on 8 August 1864 at Geelong West, married August Ernest Winkler in 1884, died on 18 November 1900, buried at the Grovedale Cemetery Oscar Reinheld — born on 6 January 1866 at Germantown, married Anna Christine Elizabeth Baum on 28 May 1901 at the Lutheran church, Germantown, died on 12 March 1917 aged 51 years at Heidelberg, buried in the Presbyterian section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery Auguste Juliane Ida — born on 5 September 1868, married Rudolph Adolf on 26 December 1890, divorced in 1913, married James Mcvay in 1914, died on 29 November 1942 aged 73 at South Yarra Frank Julius Otto — born on 19 December 1872 at Germantown, married Louisa Martha Baensch in 1896, died in 1943 at Geelong, aged 70 Julius was a vigneron in Grovedale. In 1887 he was elected a member of the Board of Advice for the School District of South Barwon. In 1891 he became a South Barwon Shire councillor, serving until 1896. He was a trustee for land set aside for the Lutheran Church at Grovedale. Julius died on 20 May 1897 aged 58 years at Grovedale. He was buried at Grovedale Cemetery. Augustine died on 27 May 1912 aged 69 years at Geelong. She was buried with Julius at Grovedale. |

Julius Rau was my great grandfather. His daughter Emma Amelia Belicke (nee Rau) was my mother's mother. Interested in family story. Emma died in 1919 when Mum was 5.

Julius was my great, great grandfather. The family tree to me is Frank Julius to Frank Fredrick to John Edwin to me.
