Lawrence Cleverdon, son of James and Annie Maria Lillian (née Harward) Mountjoy was born on 8 October 1820 at Kilkhampton in Cornwall. In 1949, he married Mary Ann, daughter of John and Mary (née Burrow) Heard. The couple emigrated in as unassisted passengers arriving in November 1852 on the Prince Regent. Mary Ann was reputed to have died and was buried on the roadside near Naracoorte, South Australia. The couple may have been travelling to Caleb Mountjoy's wedding in Adelaide. On 10 November 1855 Lawrence married Jane Honeycombe in Geelong. Both marriages were childless. Lawrence was a South Barwon councillor, serving from 1888 until 1897. With his brothers Caleb and Thomas he farmed at Roslyn. The three brothers founded Lorne, moving there in March 1882, with the establishment of a boarding house and coach service. Lawrence died on 17 May 1899 aged 78 years at Geelong and was buried in the Methodist section of the Highton Cemetery. Jane died on 5 April 1910 aged 84 years at Geelong and was buried with him. |
