Samuel Edwin, son of George Tilley and Ann (née Harding) Vagg, was born in 1848 at Geelong. On 5 July 1871 he married Mary Jane Matthews at Tandarook in Victoria. Samuel was twenty three years of age and Mary Jane was nineteen. They had the following children: Samuel Edwin — born 8 March 1872 at Cobden, married Adeline Elizabeth Candy, died 12 July 1906, died 12 July 1906 in Durban in South Africa Mary Louisa — born in 1875 at Cobden, died in 1896 aged 20 years at Collingwood Victoria Adeline — born in 1877 at Cobden, married Alfred Ernest Bencraft in 1908, died in 1909 aged 30 years in Victoria Charles — born in 1879 at Port Campbell, died aged 4 days Esther Ann May — born on 5 May 1881 at Port Campbell, married Hugh Kenneth Lemarchand on 2 January 1907 at St Cyprian's Church in Durban South Africa, died on 15 June 1930 at Durban, buried at Stellawood Cemetery in Durban. Esther and Hugh had two children Alleyne May and Hugh Wharton; both born and died in South Africa. By 1891 Samuel and Mary were living at Newport above a cobbler's shop which Samuel ran. On 13 February stock to the value of £700 was destroyed by a fire in the building. In 1892 Samuel left the family. In May 1898, after not hearing from him, Mary partitioned for divorce. Samuel's daughter, Esther and his son, also Samuel, who was engaged to Adeline Eliza Candy, left for South Africa to take up employment during the depression of the 1890s in Australia. Adeline later joined him, they married on 16 January 1897 in Durban and had three sons, Mervyn, Lionel and Samuel. Samuel junior died of pneumonia on 12 July 1906. Adeline returned to Williamstown after Samuel's death. Lionel, a railway employee died in 1941 when he was struck by a train at Spencer Street, Station. Adeline died on 11 May 1951 at Williamstown. |
