Willie, son of Godfrey and Sarah (née Carter) Hirst was born on 27 October 1877 in Yorkshire in England. He arrived in Australia on the Garonne, aged 7 years, in August 1885 with his mother, Sarah and his two brothers Lewis (aged 4) and Harold (aged 1). He married Catherine Ann Martin Cameron in 1901. The couple had the following children: Ivy — born on 24 September 1902 at Geelong, died on 29 August 1951 aged 48 years at Balwyn, buried in the Methodist section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery Florence Minerva — born on 13 May 1904, married Robert Money on 22 December 1928 at Hawthorn Presbyterian Church, died on 5 June 1989 at Balwyn Katie — born on 15 August 1905, married Frank Stanbury Martin in 1930, died on 31 May 1989 at Camberwell Vera — born on 6 November 1907 at Geelong, married Leslie Wallace Aikman on 24 September 1930 at St David's Church in Newtown, died on 21 November 1977 at Malvern Godfrey — born on 26 December 1910 at Geelong, married Rose Elizabeth Pearl Maddern on 20 October 1934 at St David's Church in Newtown, died on 28 September 1991 at Geelong Erva — born in 1912 at Geelong, married George Brian Seward in 1936, died on 1 July 1992 at Croydon John Cameron — born on 30 November 1914 at Geelong, married Thelma Mary Doolan on 24 April 1946 at St Paul's Anglican Church in Latrobe Terrace Geelong, died on 21 December 2006, buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Highton Cemetery The family lived in Francis Street in Belmont until 1923. Willie became the Managing director of Godfrey Hirst and Company's Excelsior Woollen Mills in South Geelong. He was a South Barwon councillor, serving from 1917 until 1925 including term as president. He was president of the Torquay Golf Club at the time of his death. A perpetual trophy was instituted in his honour to be played for annually. | Willie died at his home "Manilla" Elizabeth (now Roebuck) Street in Newtown on Wednesday 2 September 1925 aged 48 years. He had returned from a trip to Brisbane the preceding Saturday and was at his office on the Monday but feeling unwell on the Tuesday, stayed at home. He was buried in the Methodist section of the Geelong Eastern Cemetery. Catherine, who died on 2 January 1965, was buried with him. |
