Ebenezer Edward, son of James and Harriett Louisa (née Evans) Hendy, was born in 1870 in Geelong. In 1893 he married Minnie Ethelwyn Higgins. The couple had 2 children, Edward Percival in 1894 and James Clarence in 1896. Minnie died on 3 March 1904. In 1909 he married Beatrice Maud Adamson. The couple had three children, Alan in 1910, Mary Winsome in 1912 and Kenneth Roy in 1915. Ebenezer died on 17 September 1936 and was buried in the Independant section of the Geelong Western Cemetery. The following year Beatrice married Arthur James Johnson. She died in 1953 at Mont Park. Ebenezer was a well-known auctioneer in Geelong and the Western district. He was a Barrabool Shire councillor from 1916 until 1922. He was the first secretary of the Great Ocean Road Trust, and later a vice-president of the trust. The Hendy Highway (now Hendy Main Road) running through Moriac was named after him and formed the eastern boundary of his land. He was elected secretary of the Paraparap and Pettavel Farmers Progress Association in 1909. He purchased land to subdivide and set up a modern township. The blocks were put up for sale in 1925. |
